Counterinsurgency in Somalia: Lessons Learned

The Joint Special Operations University at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida published in September 2014 a major study titled "Counterinsurgency in Somalia: Lessons Learned from the African Union Mission in Somalia, 2007-2013" by Bronwyn Bruton, Africa Center at the Atlantic Council, and Paul Williams, Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University.

The monograph provides a case study of how the African Union's largest ever peace operation--the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM)--sought to achieve its objectives.  The study is based on a historical and political analysis of the key players and seeks to draw out key strategic and political lessons from AMISOM's experiences.
