David Throup, a senior associate with the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, wrote a solid analysis titled Kenya's Intervention in Somalia on 16 February 2012.
He concluded: "Whether the operation can ultimately succeed in furthering Kenya's short- and longer-term objectives is uncertain. The deployment (as with most interventions in Somalia) may have unanticipated costs, complications, and consequences both within Kenya and the broader region that undermine short-term gains and weaken domestic and regional support."
